Are We There Yet?
This has been the craziest summer. Birthings and weddings and movings---oh my! Just about the time you think your kids are all settled and just happily living their lives, they change stuff up on you. Kylee and Rick announced they were being transfered from Hawaii to San Antonio, and Kylee decides she will come ahead of Rick with the four kids to find a house, get Connor in school and find Camden a preschool! If you read her blog, she questions whether she is brave or stupid. As her mother, I would just like to interject here that although she has always been a very brave person, the "stupid" choice seems the obvious one! Four kids---- 4months to 6 yrs---all night flight----by yourself----yep, I vote for stupid! But, because I'm her mom and I did birth her and all,and there's not much I wouldn't do to see one of my grandkids, I catch her on the other end so to speak and pick her up in Dallas as she gets off the plane with her troops. We load more luggage than I can count into and on top of our SUV with the help of a very nice baggage attendant and proceed to San Antonio, looking something like the Beverly Hillbillies, minus the rocking chair! The kids were great but we weren't in the car 30 minutes before they wanted to know if we were "there" yet.( I hated telling them that we were still trying to get through Dallas!) We organized our maps and navigation system to try and arrive just in time to meet with someone to start showing Kylee houses. We stopped at Mc D's for breakfast and added pulling Connors first tooth to our itinerary just to break the monotony of the trip, (somtimes my old dental assisting training comes in handy!) Dave drove their Honda down 2 days later with as much stuff as he could cram in the car, then flew back. We found a very nice house the second day, great neighborhood, a block from the new school Connor would go to (Go Gators!) and we began our "camp out". Completely empty house, except for 2 camp chairs,a little lamp and table, some little chairs for the kids, aero beds, tv, dvd player, a few toys, movies and books, and minimal bedding. Bought a dorm fridge, a wonderful ottoman that was used for EVERYTHING, food and necessities and started livin' the good life! After the kids went to bed, Kylee and I watched episodes from the first 2 seasons of Sex in the City for the next two weeks! Ahhh, mother/daughter bonding-----it doesn't get better than this! IF we weren't waiting for cable to be hooked up we might have known a little more about the hurricane bearing down on Texas but we remained blissfully ignorant of all the commotion around us til we saw warnings on the interstate info strips to gas up your cars and prepare for outages, but that's another story. I left our SUV since theirs hasn't arrived from Hawaii yet and flew home Sunday. We'll fly back in a few weeks to drive our car home after their stuff arrives. Finally, I think they're all settled again. I hope they are------- I pray they are------at least til after the holidays!
